Behind the Spotlights

Federico García Lorca was assassinated in August of 1936. They considered him, and by this order, socialist, friend of Fernando de los Ríos, mason and homosexual. Lorca was one of the most important figures in the cultural history of Spain.

The Lugo-based company Teatro Baixo da Area staged the first Galician translation of “Poeta en Nueva York”, one of Lorca’s most important works. These images visually narrate the moments before the premiere. Intimate moments that capture the emotions behind the spotlight of Pomba Luxilde, María Roja, Sergio Zearreta, Sabela Eiriz and the whole team.

As Lamas

As Lamas

In 1994 the gypsy village settled in the old prison of A Pinguela (Monforte de Lemos) is moved by the local council to a new location, to the municipal land that existed at the back of the livestock market. At first the government wanted to finnance new buildings but the initiative fails completely. On that moment, according to interviewees’ testimony, they are provided with one cubic meter of wood per family to make a new shack. After some time the project found several problems because finally the land was not urbanizable.

Later, around 2002, the City Council installed metal construction sheds in exchange. As they have told me in the village, the space was too small to live a family. Ough to this situation of passivity the habitants had to repair and adapt these houses themselves gradually.

The main activity to earn money in As Lamas is selling scrap supported with some public helps like Risga. However, as they told me, they are denying nowadays because of the houses are not in enough good condition according the local government. Some kind of ouroboros on the argument.

Praza de Abastos

Praza de Abastos

Tuesday and Friday morning, a traditional market takes place in Lugo.

Each day the market loses customers. This kind of social economy is disappearing. Praza de Abastos is an extremely interesting place from an ethnological and sociological point of view.  This type of social event tends to be replaced by modern supermarkets in which there is no human treatment.
